Hilbert Series for Moduli Spaces of Two Instantons

A. Hanany, N. Mekareeya, S.S. Razamat

The Hilbert Series (HS) of the moduli space of two G instantons on C^2, where G is a simple gauge group, is studied in detail. For a given G, the moduli space is a singular hyperKahler cone with a symmetry group U(2) \times G, where U(2) is the natural symmetry group of C^2. Holomorphic functions on the moduli space transform in irreducible representations of the symmetry group and hence the Hilbert series admits a character expansion. For cases that G is a classical group (of type A, B, C, or D), there is an ADHM construction which allows us to compute the HS explicitly using a contour integral. For cases that G is of E-type, recent index results allow for an explicit computation of the HS. The character expansion can be expressed as an infinite sum which lives on a Cartesian lattice that is generated by a small number of representations. This structure persists for all G and allows for an explicit expressions of the HS to all simple groups. For cases that G is of type G_2 or F_4, discrete symmetries are enough to evaluate the HS exactly, even though neither ADHM construction nor index is known for these cases.

S-duality as a beta-deformed Fourier transform

D. Galakhov, A. Mironov, A. Morozov

An attempt is made to formulate Gaiotto's S-duality relations in an explicit quantitative form. Formally the problem is that of evaluation of the Racah coefficients for the Virasoro algebra, and we approach it with the help of the matrix model representation of the AGT-related conformal blocks and Nekrasov functions. In the Seiberg-Witten limit, this S-duality reduces to the Legendre transformation. In the simplest case, its lifting to the level of Nekrasov functions is just the Fourier transform, while corrections are related to the beta-deformation. We calculate them with the help of the matrix model approach and observe that they vanish for beta=1. Explicit evaluation of the same corrections from the U_q(sl(2)) infinite-dimensional representation formulas due to B.Ponsot and J.Teshner remains an open problem.

K-Rational D-Brane Crystals

R. Schimmrigk

In this paper the problem of constructing spacetime from string theory is addressed in the context of D-brane physics. It is suggested that the knowledge of discrete configurations of D-branes is sufficient to reconstruct the motivic building blocks of certain Calabi-Yau varieties. The collections of D-branes involved have algebraic base points, leading to the notion of K-arithmetic D-crystals for algebraic number fields K. This idea can be tested for D0-branes in the framework of toroidal compactifications via the conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer. For the special class of D0-crystals of Heegner type these conjectures can be interpreted as formulae that relate the canonical Neron-Tate height of the base points of the D-crystals to special values of the motivic L-function at the central point. In simple cases the knowledge of the D-crystals of Heegner type suffices to uniquely determine the geometry.

Representations of affine Kac-Moody groups over local and global fields: a survey of some recent results

A. Braverman, D. Kazhdan

Let G be a reductive algebraic group over a local field K or a global field F. It is well know that there exists a non-trivial and interesting representation theory of the group G(K) as well as the theory of automorphic forms on the corresponding adelic group. The purpose of this paper is to give a survey of some recent constructions and results, which show that there should exist an analog of the above theories in the case when G is replaced by the corresponding affine Kac-Moody group (which is essentially built from the formal loop group G((t)) of G). Specifically we discuss the following topics : affine (classical and geometric) Satake isomorphism, affine Iwahori-Hecke algebra, affine Eisenstein series and Tamagawa measure.

All-order asymptotics of hyperbolic knot invariants from non-perturbative topological recursion of A-polynomials

G. Borot, B. Eynard

We propose a conjecture to compute the all-order asymptotic expansion of the colored Jones polynomial of the complement of a hyperbolic knot, J_N(q = exp(2u/N)) when N goes to infinity. Our conjecture claims that the asymptotic expansion of the colored Jones polynomial is a the formal wave function of an integrable system whose semiclassical spectral curve S would be the SL_2(C) character variety of the knot (the A-polynomial), and is formulated in the framework of the topological recursion. It takes as starting point the proposal made recently by Dijkgraaf, Fuji and Manabe (who kept only the perturbative part of the wave function, and found some discrepancies), but it also contains the non-perturbative parts, and solves the discrepancy problem. These non-perturbative corrections are derivatives of Theta functions associated to S, but the expansion is still in powers of 1/N due to the special properties of A-polynomials. We provide a detailed check for the figure-eight knot and the once-punctured torus bundle L^2R. We also present a heuristic argument inspired from the case of torus knots, for which knot invariants can be computed from a matrix model.

Off-Shell Hodge Dualities in Linearised Gravity and E11

N. Boulanger, P.P. Cook, D. Ponomarev

In a spacetime of dimension n, the dual graviton is characterised by a Young diagram with two columns, the first of length n-3 and the second of length one. In this paper we perform the off-shell dualisation relating the dual graviton to the double-dual graviton, displaying the precise off-shell field content and gauge invariances. We then show that one can further perform infinitely many off-shell dualities, reformulating linearised gravity in an infinite number of equivalent actions. The actions require supplementary mixed-symmetry fields which are contained within the generalised Kac-Moody algebra E11 and are associated with null and imaginary roots.

Emergent spacetime and black hole probes from automorphic forms

R. Schimmrigk

Over the past few years the arithmetic Langlands program has found applications in two quite different problems that arise in string physics. The first of these is concerned with the fundamental problem of deriving the geometry of spacetime from the worldsheet dynamics, leading to a realization of the notion of an emergent spacetime in string theory. The second problem is concerned with the idea of using automorphic black holes as probes of spacetime. In this article both of these applications of the Langlands program are described.

Large N Duality, Mirror Symmetry, and a Q-deformed A-polynomial for Knots

Mina Aganagic, Cumrun Vafa

We reconsider topological string realization of SU(N) Chern-Simons theory on S^3. At large N, for every knot K in S^3, we obtain a polynomial A_K(x,p;Q) in two variables x,p depending on the t'Hooft coupling parameter Q=e^{Ng_s}. Its vanishing locus is the quantum corrected moduli space of a special Lagrangian brane L_K, associated to K, probing the large N dual geometry, the resolved conifold. Using a generalized SYZ conjecture this leads to the statement that for every such Lagrangian brane L_K we get a distinct mirror of the resolved conifold given by uv=A_K(x,p;Q). Perturbative corrections of the refined B-model for the open string sector on the mirror geometry capture BPS degeneracies and thus the knot homology invariants. Thus, in terms of its ability to distinguish knots, the classical function A_K(x,p;Q) contains at least as much information as knot homologies. In the special case when N=2, our observations lead to a physical explanation of the generalized (quantum) volume conjecture. Moreover, the specialization to Q=1 of A_K contains the classical A-polynomial of the knot as a factor.

Radii of the E8 Gosset Circles as the Mass Excitations in the Ising Model

M. Koca, N.O. Koca
The Zamolodchikov's conjecture implying the exceptional Lie group E8 seems to be validated by an experiment on the quantum phase transitions of the 1D Ising model carried out by the Coldea et. al. The E8 model which follows from the affine Toda field theory predicts 8 bound states with the mass relations in the increasing order m1, m2= tau m1, m3, m4, m5, m6=tau m3, m7= tau m4, m8= tau m5, where tau= (1+\sqrt(5))/2 represents the golden ratio. Above relations follow from the fact that the Coxeter group W(H4) is a maximal subgroup of the Coxeter-Weyl group W(E8). These masses turn out to be proportional to the radii of the Gosset's circles on the Coxeter plane obtained by an orthogonal projection of the root system of E8 . We also note that the masses m1, m3, m4 and m5 correspond to the radii of the circles obtained by projecting the vertices of the 600-cell, a 4D polytope of the non-crystallographic Coxeter group W(H4). A special non-orthogonal projection of the simple roots on the Coxeter plane leads to exactly the numerical values of the masses of the bound states as 0.4745, 0.7678, 0.9438, 1.141, 1.403, 1.527, 1.846, and 2.270. We note the striking equality of the first two numerical values to the first two masses of the bound states determined by the Coldea et. al.

Faces of matrix models

Partition functions of eigenvalue matrix models possess a number of very different descriptions: as matrix integrals, as solutions to linear and non-linear equations, as tau-functions of integrable hierarchies and as special-geometry prepotentials, as result of the action of W-operators and of various recursions on elementary input data, as gluing of certain elementary building blocks. All this explains the central role of such matrix models in modern mathematical physics: they provide the basic "special functions" to express the answers and relations between them, and they serve as a dream model of what one should try to achieve in any other field.

Eisenstein series for infinite-dimensional U-duality groups

We consider Eisenstein series appearing as coefficients of curvature corrections in the low-energy expansion of type II string theory four-graviton scattering amplitudes. We define these Eisenstein series over all groups in the E_n series of string duality groups, and in particular for the infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody groups E9, E10 and E11. We show that, remarkably, the so-called constant term of Kac-Moody-Eisenstein series contains only a finite number of terms for particular choices of a parameter appearing in the definition of the series. This resonates with the idea that the constant term of the Eisenstein series encodes perturbative string corrections in BPS-protected sectors allowing only a finite number of corrections. We underpin our findings with an extensive discussion of physical degeneration limits in D<3 space-time dimensions.

Umbral Moonshine

We describe surprising relationships between automorphic forms of various kinds, imaginary quadratic number fields and a certain system of six finite groups that are parameterised naturally by the divisors of twelve. The Mathieu group correspondence recently discovered by Eguchi-Ooguri-Tachikawa is recovered as a special case. We introduce a notion of extremal Jacobi form which characterises the Jacobi forms arising; they are closely related to vector-valued mock modular forms belonging to a sequence studied recently by Dabholkar-Murthy-Zagier in connection with the physics of quantum black holes in string theory. In a manner similar to monstrous moonshine the automorphic forms we identify constitute evidence for the existence of infinite-dimensional graded modules for the six groups in our system. We formulate an umbral moonshine conjecture that is in direct analogy with the monstrous moonshine conjecture of Conway-Norton. Curiously, we find a number of Ramanujan's mock theta functions appearing as McKay-Thompson series. A new feature not apparent in the monstrous case is a property which allows us to predict the fields of definition of certain homogeneous submodules for the groups involved. For four of the groups in our system we find analogues of both the classical McKay correspondence and McKay's monstrous Dynkin diagram observation manifesting simultaneously and compatibly.

Ramanujan type congruences for modular forms of several variables

We give congruences between the Eisenstein series and a cusp form in the cases of Siegel modular forms and Hermitian modular forms. We should emphasize that there is a relation between the existence of a prime dividing the $k-1$-th generalized Bernoulli number and the existence of non-trivial Hermitian cusp forms of weight $k$. We will conclude by giving numerical examples for each case.

24 faces of the Borcherds modular form Phi_{12}

The fake monster Lie algebra is determined by the Borcherds function Phi_{12} which is the reflective modular form of the minimal possible weight with respect to O(II_{2,26}). We prove that the first non-zero Fourier-Jacobi coefficient of Phi_{12} in any of 23 Niemeier cusps is equal to the Weyl-Kac denominator function of the affine Lie algebra of the root system of the corresponding Niemeier lattice. This is an automorphic answer (in the case of the fake monster Lie algebra) on the old question of I. Frenkel and A. Feingold (1983) about possible relations between hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras, Siegel modular forms and affine Lie algebras.

Numerical Algebraic Geometry: A New Perspective on String and Gauge Theories

The interplay rich between algebraic geometry and string and gauge theories has recently been immensely aided by advances in computational algebra. However, these symbolic (Gr\"{o}bner) methods are severely limited by algorithmic issues such as exponential space complexity and being highly sequential. In this paper, we introduce a novel paradigm of numerical algebraic geometry which in a plethora of situations overcomes these short-comings. Its so-called 'embarrassing parallelizability' allows us to solve many problems and extract physical information which elude the symbolic methods. We describe the method and then use it to solve various problems arising from physics which could not be otherwise solved.

Seiberg-Witten prepotential for E-string theory and random partitions

We find a Nekrasov-type expression for the Seiberg-Witten prepotential for the six-dimensional non-critical E_8 string theory toroidally compactified down to four dimensions. The prepotential represents the BPS partition function of the E_8 strings wound around one of the circles of the toroidal compactification with general winding numbers and momenta. We show that our expression exhibits expected modular properties. In particular, we prove that it obeys the modular anomaly equation known to be satisfied by the prepotential.

Volume Conjecture: Refined and Categorified

The generalized volume conjecture relates asymptotic behavior of the colored Jones polynomials to objects naturally defined on an algebraic curve, the zero locus of the A-polynomial $A(x,y)$. Another "family version" of the volume conjecture depends on a quantization parameter, usually denoted $q$ or $\hbar$; this quantum volume conjecture (also known as the AJ-conjecture) can be stated in a form of a q-difference equation that annihilates the colored Jones polynomials and $SL(2,\C)$ Chern-Simons partition functions. We propose refinements / categorifications of both conjectures that include an extra deformation parameter $t$ and describe similar properties of homological knot invariants and refined BPS invariants. Much like their unrefined / decategorified predecessors, that correspond to $t=-1$, the new volume conjectures involve objects naturally defined on an algebraic curve $A^{ref} (x,y; t)$ obtained by a particular deformation of the A-polynomial, and its quantization $\hat A^{ref} (\hat x, \hat y; q, t)$. We compute both classical and quantum t-deformed curves in a number of examples coming from colored knot homologies and refined BPS invariants.

A trio of Bernoulli relations, their implications for the Ramanujan polynomials and the zeta constants

We study the interplay between recurrences for zeta related functions at integer values, `Minor Corner Lattice' Toeplitz determinants and integer composition based sums. Our investigations touch on functional identities due to Ramanujan and Grosswald, the transcendence of the zeta function at odd integer values, the Li Criterion for the Riemann Hypothesis and pseudo-characteristic polynomials for zeta related functions. We begin with a result of Lettington's and some seemingly new Bernoulli relations, which we use to obtain a generalised Ramanujan polynomial and properties thereof.

A $(-q)$-analogue of weight multiplicities

We prove a conjecture in \cite{L} stating that certain polynomials $P^{\sigma}_{y,w}(q)$ introduced in \cite{LV1} for twisted involutions in an affine Weyl group give $(-q)$-analogues of weight multiplicities of the Langlands dual group $\check{G}$. We also prove that the signature of a naturally defined hermitian form on each irreducible representation of $\check{G}$ can be expressed in terms of these polynomials $P^{\sigma}_{y,w}(q)$.

Universality in Chern-Simons theory

We show that the perturbative part of the partition function in the Chern-Simons theory on a 3-sphere as well as the central charge and expectation value of the unknotted Wilson loop in the adjoint representation can be expressed in terms of the universal Vogel's parameters $\alpha, \beta, \gamma.$ The derivation is based on certain generalisations of the Freudenthal-de Vries strange formula.
