Sato-Tate theorem for families and low-lying zeros of automorphic $L$-functions

Sug-Woo Shin, Nicolas Templier

We consider certain families of automorphic representations over number fields arising from the principle of functoriality of Langlands. Let $G$ be a reductive group over a number field $F$ which admits discrete series representations at infinity. Let $^{L}G=\hat G \rtimes \mathrm{Gal}(\bar F/F)$ be the associated $L$-group and $r:{}^L G\to \mathrm{GL}(d,\mathbb{C})$ a continuous homomorphism which is irreducible and does not factor through $\mathrm{Gal}(\bar F/F)$. The families under consideration consist of discrete automorphic representations of $G(\mathbb{A}_F)$ of given weight and level and we let either the weight or the level grow to infinity.
We establish a quantitative Plancherel and a quantitative Sato-Tate equidistribution theorem for the Satake parameters of these families. This generalizes earlier results in the subject, notably of Sarnak [Progr. Math. 70 (1987), 321--331.] and Serre [J. Amer. Math. Soc. 10 (1997), no. 1, 75--102.].
As an application we study the distribution of the low-lying zeros of the associated family of $L$-functions $L(s,\pi,r)$, assuming from the principle of functoriality that these $L$-functions are automorphic. We find that the distribution of the 1-level densities coincides with the distribution of the 1-level densities of eigenvalues of one of the Unitary, Symplectic and Orthogonal ensembles, in accordance with the Katz-Sarnak heuristics.
We provide a criterion based on the Frobenius--Schur indicator to determine this Symmetry type. If $r$ is not isomorphic to its dual $r^\vee$ then the Symmetry type is Unitary. Otherwise there is a bilinear form on $\mathbb{C}^d$ which realizes the isomorphism between $r$ and $r^\vee$. If the bilinear form is symmetric (resp. alternating) then $r$ is real (resp. quaternionic) and the Symmetry type is Symplectic (resp. Orthogonal).

Quantum symmetric Kac-Moody pairs

S. Kolb

The present paper develops a general theory of quantum group analogs of symmetric pairs for involutive automorphism of the second kind of symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras. The resulting quantum symmetric pairs are right coideal subalgebras of quantized enveloping algebras. They give rise to triangular decompositions, including a quantum analog of the Iwasawa decomposition, and they can be written explicitly in terms of generators and relations. Moreover, their centers and their specializations are determined. The constructions follow G. Letzter's theory of quantum symmetric pairs for semisimple Lie algebras. The main additional ingredient is the classification of involutive automorphisms of the second kind of symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras due to Kac and Wang. The resulting theory comprises various classes of examples which have previously appeared in the literature, such as q-Onsager algebras and the twisted q-Yangians introduced by Molev, Ragoucy, and Sorba.

Quantum extremal loop weight modules and monomial crystals

M. Mathieu

In this paper we construct a new family of representations for the quantum toroidal algebras of type $A_n$. The definition of extremal loop weight modules of quantum toroidal algebras was proposed by Hernandez in [23]. We construct extremal loop weight modules associated to analogues of level 0 fundamental weights $\varpi_\ell$ for $\mathcal{U}_q(sl_{n+1}^{tor})$ when $n= 2r+1$ is odd and $\ell = 1$ or $\ell = r+1$, called level 0 extremal fundamental loop weight modules. To do it, we relate monomial realizations of level 0 extremal fundamental weight crystals with integrable representations of $\mathcal{U}_q(sl_{n+1}^{tor})$. The construction is based on the combinatorial study of these crystals: we introduce promotion operators for the level 0 extremal fundamental weight crystals, corresponding to the cyclic symmetry of the Dynkin diagram of type $A_n^{(1)}$. They are used to define an action of the quantum toroidal algebras at the level of representations. By specializing $q$ at roots of unity $\epsilon$, we get finite-dimensional modules of $\mathcal{U}_\epsilon(sl_{n+1}^{tor})$. In general, we give a conjectural process to construct extremal loop weight modules from monomial realizations of crystals.

Exact Results on the ABJM Fermi Gas

Y. Hatsuda, S. Moriyama, K. Okuyama

We study the Fermi gas quantum mechanics associated to the ABJM matrix model. We develop the method to compute the grand partition function of the ABJM theory, and compute exactly the partition function Z(N) up to N=9 when the Chern-Simons level k=1. We find that the eigenvalue problem of this quantum mechanical system is reduced to the diagonalization of a certain Hankel matrix. In reducing the number of integrations by commuting coordinates and momenta, we find an exact relation concerning the grand partition function, which is interesting on its own right and very helpful for determining the partition function. We also study the TBA-type integral equations that allow us to compute the grand partition function numerically. Surprisingly, all of our exact results of the partition functions are written in terms of polynomials of 1/pi with rational coefficients.

ABJM Wilson loops in the Fermi gas approach

A. Klemm, M. Marino, M. Schiereck, M. Soroush

The matrix model of ABJM theory can be formulated in terms of a Fermi gas in an external potential. We show that, in this formalism, vevs of Wilson loops correspond to averages of operators in the statistical-mechanical problem. This makes it possible to calculate these vevs at all orders in 1/N, up to exponentially small corrections, and for arbitrary Chern-Simons coupling, by using the WKB expansion. We present explicit results for the vevs of 1/6 and the 1/2 BPS Wilson loops, at any winding number, in terms of Airy functions. Our expressions are shown to reproduce the low genus results obtained previously in the 't Hooft expansion.

Lectures on non-perturbative effects in large N gauge theories, matrix models and strings

M. Marino

In these lectures I present a review of non-perturbative instanton effects in quantum theories, with a focus on large N gauge theories and matrix models. I first consider the structure of these effects in the case of ordinary differential equations, which provide a model for more complicated theories, and I introduce in a pedagogical way some technology from resurgent analysis, like trans-series and the resurgent version of the Stokes phenomenon. After reviewing instanton effects in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, I address general aspects of large N instantons and then present a detailed review of non-perturbative effects in matrix models. Finally, I also consider two applications of these techniques in string theory.

Supercategorification of quantum Kac-Moody Algebras

S.-J. Kang, M. Kashiwara, S.-j. Oh

We show that the quiver Hecke superalgebras and their cyclotomic quotients provide a supercategorification of quantum Kac-Moody algebras and their integrable highest weight modules.

M5-branes from gauge theories on the 5-sphere

H.-C. Kim, S. Kim

We use the 5-sphere partition functions of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories to explore the (2,0) superconformal theory on S^5 x S^1. The 5d theories can be regarded as Scherk-Schwarz reductions of the 6d theory along a circle. In a special limit, the perturbative partition function takes the form of the Chern-Simons partition function on S^3. With a simple non-perturbative completion, it becomes a 6d index which captures the degeneracy of a sector of BPS states as well as the index version of the vacuum Casimir energy. The Casimir energy exhibits the N^3 scaling at large N. The large N index for U(N) gauge group also completely agrees with the supergravity index on AdS_7 x S^4.

Interacting fermions and N=2 Chern-Simons-matter theories

M. Marino, P. Putrov

The partition function on the three-sphere of N=3 Chern-Simons-matter theories can be formulated in terms of an ideal Fermi gas. In this paper we show that, in theories with N=2 supersymmetry, the partition function corresponds to a gas of interacting fermions in one dimension. The large N limit is the thermodynamic limit of the gas and it can be analyzed with the Hartree and Thomas-Fermi approximations, which lead to the known large N solutions of these models. We use this interacting fermion picture to analyze in detail N=2 theories with one single node. In the case of theories with no long-range forces we incorporate exchange effects and argue that the partition function is given by an Airy function, as in N=3 theories. For the theory with g adjoint superfields and long-range forces, the Thomas-Fermi approximation leads to an integral equation which determines the large N, strongly coupled R-charge.

Colored HOMFLY polynomial via skein theory

Zhu

In this paper, we study the properties of the colored HOMFLY polynomials via HOMFLY skein theory. We prove some limit behaviors and symmetries of the colored HOMFLY polynomial predicted in some physicists' recent works.

Large N Free Energy of 3d N=4 SCFTs and AdS/CFT

B. Assel, J. Estes, M. Yamazaki

We provide a non-trivial check of the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence recently proposed in arXiv:1106.4253 by verifying the GKPW relation in the large N limit. The CFT free energy is obtained from the previous works (arXiv:1105.2551, arXiv:1105.4390) on the S^3 partition function for 3-dimensional N=4 SCFT T[SU(N)]. This is matched with the computation of the type IIB action on the corresponding gravity background. We unexpectedly find that the leading behavior of the free energy at large N is 1/2 N^2 ln N. We also extend our results to richer theories and argue that 1/2 N^2 ln N is the maximal free energy at large N in this class of gauge theories.

Exact Results in D=2 Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

N. Doroud, J. Gomis, B. L. Floch, S. Lee

We compute exactly the partition function of two dimensional N=(2,2) gauge theories on S^2 and show that it admits two dual descriptions: either as an integral over the Coulomb branch or as a sum over vortex and anti-vortex excitations on the Higgs branches of the theory. We further demonstrate that correlation functions in two dimensional Liouville/Toda CFT compute the S^2 partition function for a class of N=(2,2) gauge theories, thereby uncovering novel modular properties in two dimensional gauge theories. Some of these gauge theories flow in the infrared to Calabi-Yau sigma models - such as the conifold - and the topology changing flop transition is realized as crossing symmetry in Liouville/Toda CFT. Evidence for Seiberg duality in two dimensions is exhibited by demonstrating that the partition function of conjectured Seiberg dual pairs are the same.

Brane Tilings and Specular Duality

A. Hanany, R.-K. Seong

We study a new duality which pairs 4d N=1 supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. They are represented by brane tilings and are worldvolume theories of D3 branes at Calabi-Yau 3-fold singularities. The new duality identifies theories which have the same combined mesonic and baryonic moduli space, otherwise called the master space. We obtain the associated Hilbert series which encodes both the generators and defining relations of the moduli space. We illustrate our findings with a set of brane tilings that have reflexive toric diagrams.

Partition functions of N=(2,2) gauge theories on S^2 and vortices

F. Benini, S. Cremonesi

We apply localization techniques to compute the partition function of a two-dimensional N=(2,2) R-symmetric theory of vector and chiral multiplets on S^2. The path integral reduces to a sum over topological sectors of a matrix integral over the Cartan subalgebra of the gauge group. For gauge theories which would be completely Higgsed in the presence of a Fayet-Iliopoulos term in flat space, the path integral alternatively reduces to the product of a vortex times an antivortex partition functions, weighted by semiclassical factors and summed over isolated points on the Higgs branch. As applications we evaluate the partition function for some U(N) gauge theories, showing equality of the path integrals for theories conjectured to be dual by Hori and Tong and deriving new expressions for vortex partition functions.

$SO/Sp$ Chern-Simons Gauge Theories At Large $N$, $SO/Sp$ Penner Models And The Gauge Group Volumes

N. Chair, M. Dalabeeh

We construct a deformed $SO/Sp$ Penner generating function responsible for the close connection between $SO/Sp$ Chern-Simons gauge theories at large $N$ and the $SO/Sp$ Penner models. This construction is then shown to follow from a sector of a Chern-Simons gauge theory with coupling constant $\lambda$. The free energy and its continuum limit of the perturbative Chern-Simons gauge theory are obtained from the Penner model. Finally, asymptotic expansions for the logarithm of the gauge group volumes are given for every genus $g\geq 0$ and shown to be equivalent to the continuum limits of the $SO/Sp$ Chern-Simons gauge theories and the $SO/Sp$ Penner models.

IIA Perspective On Cascading Gauge Theory

D. Kutasov, A. Wissanji

We study the N=1 supersymmetric cascading gauge theory found in type IIB string theory on p regular and M fractional D3-branes at the tip of the conifold, using the T-dual type IIA description. We reproduce the supersymmetric vacuum structure of this theory, and show that the IIA analog of the non-supersymmetric state found by Kachru, Pearson and Verlinde in the IIB description is metastable in string theory, but the barrier for tunneling to the supersymmetric vacuum goes to infinity in the field theory limit. We also comment on the N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory corresponding to regular and fractional D3-branes on a near-singular K3, and clarify the origin of the cascade in this theory.

Building SO(10) models from F-theory

I. Antoniadis, G.K. Leontaris

We revisit local F-theory SO(10) and SU(5) GUTs and analyze their properties within the framework of the maximal underlying E_8 symmetry in the elliptic fibration. We consider the symmetry enhancements along the intersections of seven-branes with the GUT surface and study in detail the embedding of the abelian factors undergoing monodromies in the covering gauge groups. We combine flux data from the successive breaking of SO(10) to SU(5) gauge symmetry and subsequently to the Standard Model one, and further constrain the parameters determining the models' particle spectra. In order to eliminate dangerous baryon number violating operators we propose ways to construct matter parity like symmetries from intrinsic geometric origin. We study implementations of the resulting constrained scenario in specific examples obtained for a variety of monodromies.

Modular Data and Verlinde Formulae for Fractional Level WZW Models I

T. Creutzig, D. Ridout

The modular properties of fractional level affine sl(2)-theories and, in particular, the application of the Verlinde formula, have a long and checkered history in conformal field theory. Recent advances in logarithmic conformal field theory have led to the realisation that problems with fractional level models stem from trying to build the theory with an insufficiently rich category of representations. In particular, the appearance of negative fusion coefficients for admissible highest weight representations is now completely understood. Here, the modular story for certain fractional level theories is completed. Modular transformations are derived for the complete set of admissible irreducible representations when the level is k=-1/2 or k=-4/3. The S-matrix data and Verlinde formula are then checked against the known fusion rules with complete agreement. Finally, an infinite set of modular invariant partition functions is constructed in each case.

Fluxed M5-instantons in F-theory

M. Kerstan, T. Weigand

We analyse the non-perturbative superpotential due to M5-brane instantons in F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds. The M5 partition function is obtained via holomorphic factorisation by explicitly performing the sum over chiral 3-form fluxes. Comparison with the partition function of fluxed Euclidean D3-brane instantons in Type IIB orientifolds allows us to fix the spin structure on the intermediate Jacobian of the M5-instanton. We furthermore analyse the contribution of the M5-instanton to the superpotential in the presence of G4 gauge flux, where the superpotential is dressed with matter fields. We explicitly evaluate the pullback of G4 onto the M5-brane as a measure for the presence of charged instanton zero modes. This accounts for the M5 charge both under massless U(1)s, if present, and under what corresponds in Type II language to geometrically massive U(1)s.

Counting Exceptional Instantons

C.A. Keller, J. Song

We show how to obtain the instanton partition function of N=2 SYM with exceptional gauge group EFG using blow-up recursion relations derived by Nakajima and Yoshioka. We compute the two instanton contribution and match it with the recent proposal for the superconformal index of rank 2 SCFTs with E6, E7 global symmetry.
