The Schur Expansion of Characteristic Polynomials and Random Matrices

arXiv:2111.02365 Taro Kimura, Edward A. Mazenc We develop a new framework to compute the exact correlators of characteristic polynomials, and their inverses, in random matrix theory. Our results hold for general potentials and incorporate the effects of an external source. In matrix model realizations of string theory, these correspond to correlation functions of exponentiated "(anti-)branes" in a given background of "momentum branes". Our method relies on expanding the (inverse) determinants in terms of Schur polynomials, then re-summing their expectation values over the allowed representations of the symmetric group. Beyond unifying previous, seemingly disparate calculations, this powerful technique immediately delivers two new results: 1) the full finite N answer for the correlator of inverse determinant insertions in the presence of a matrix source, and 2) access to an interesting, novel regime M>N, where the number of inverse determinant insertions M exceeds the size of the matrix N.

An Overview of Penumbral Moonshine

arXiv:2109.09756 John F. R. Duncan, Jeffrey A. Harvey, Brandon C. Rayhaun As Mathieu moonshine is a special case of umbral moonshine, Thompson moonshine (in half-integral weight) is a special case of a family of similar relationships between finite groups and vector-valued modular forms of a certain kind. We call this penumbral moonshine. We introduce and explain some features of this phenomenon in this work.

Poincaré series for modular graph forms at depth two. II. Iterated integrals of cusp forms

arXiv:2109.05018 Daniele Dorigoni, Axel Kleinschmidt, Oliver Schlotterer We continue the analysis of modular invariant functions, subject to inhomogeneous Laplace eigenvalue equations, that were determined in terms of Poincaré series in a companion paper. The source term of the Laplace equation is a product of (derivatives of) two non-holomorphic Eisenstein series whence the modular invariants are assigned depth two. These modular invariant functions can sometimes be expressed in terms of single-valued iterated integrals of holomorphic Eisenstein series as they appear in generating series of modular graph forms. We show that the set of iterated integrals of Eisenstein series has to be extended to include also iterated integrals of holomorphic cusp forms to find expressions for all modular invariant functions of depth two. The coefficients of these cusp forms are identified as ratios of their L-values inside and outside the critical strip.

Poincaré series for modular graph forms at depth two. I. Seeds and Laplace systems

arXiv:2109.05017 Daniele Dorigoni, Axel Kleinschmidt, Oliver Schlotterer We derive new Poincaré-series representations for infinite families of non-holomorphic modular invariant functions that include modular graph forms as they appear in the low-energy expansion of closed-string scattering amplitudes at genus one. The Poincaré series are constructed from iterated integrals over single holomorphic Eisenstein series and their complex conjugates, decorated by suitable combinations of zeta values. We evaluate the Poincaré sums over these iterated Eisenstein integrals of depth one and deduce new representations for all modular graph forms built from iterated Eisenstein integrals at depth two. In a companion paper, some of the Poincaré sums over depth-one integrals going beyond modular graph forms will be described in terms of iterated integrals over holomorphic cusp forms and their L-values.

Modular curves, the Tate-Shafarevich group and Gopakumar-Vafa invariants with discrete charges

arXiv:2108.09311 Thorsten Schimannek We show that the stringy Kähler moduli space of a generic genus one curve of degree N, for N≤5, is the Γ1(N) modular curve X1(N). This implies a correspondence between the cusps of the modular curves and certain large volume limits in the stringy Kähler moduli spaces of genus one fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with N-sections. Using Higgs transitions in M-theory and F-theory as well as modular properties of the topological string partition function, we identify these large volume limits with elements of the Tate-Shafarevich group of the genus one fibration. Singular elements appear in the form of non-commutative resolutions with a torsional B-field at the singularity. The topological string amplitudes that arise at the various large volume limits are related by modular transformations. In particular, we find that the topological string partition function of a smooth genus one fibered Calabi-Yau threefold is transformed into that of a non-commutative resolution of the Jacobian by a Fricke involution. In the case of Calabi-Yau threefolds, we propose an expansion of the partition functions of a singular fibration and its non-commutative resolutions in terms of Gopakumar-Vafa invariants that are associated to BPS states with discrete charges. For genus one fibrations with 5-sections, this provides an enumerative interpretation for the partition functions that arise at certain irrational points of maximally unipotent monodromy.

Harmonic analysis of 2d CFT partition functions

arXiv:2107.10744 Nathan Benjamin, Scott Collier, A. Liam Fitzpatrick, Alexander Maloney, Eric Perlmutter We apply the theory of harmonic analysis on the fundamental domain of SL(2,Z) to partition functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories. We decompose the partition function of c free bosons on a Narain lattice into eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of worldsheet moduli space H/SL(2,Z), and of target space moduli space O(c,c;Z)∖O(c,c;R)/O(c)×O(c). This decomposition manifests certain properties of Narain theories and ensemble averages thereof. We extend the application of spectral theory to partition functions of general two-dimensional conformal field theories, and explore its meaning in connection to AdS3 gravity. An implication of harmonic analysis is that the local operator spectrum is fully determined by a certain subset of degeneracies.

On refined Chern-Simons and refined ABJ matrix models

arXiv:2107.07525 Luca Cassia, Maxim Zabzine We consider the matrix model of U(N) refined Chern-Simons theory on S3 for the unknot. We derive a q-difference operator whose insertion in the matrix integral reproduces an infinite set of Ward identities which we interpret as q-Virasoro constraints. The constraints are rewritten as difference equations for the generating function of Wilson loop expectation values which we solve as a recursion for the correlators of the model. The solution is repackaged in the form of superintegrability formulas for Macdonald polynomials. Additionally, we derive an equivalent q-difference operator for a similar refinement of ABJ theory and show that the corresponding q-Virasoro constraints are equal to those of refined Chern-Simons for a gauge super-group U(N|M). Our equations and solutions are manifestly symmetric under Langlands duality q↔t−1 which correctly reproduces 3d Seiberg duality when q is a specific root of unity.

Chern-Simons Invariants from Ensemble Averages

arXiv:2104.14710 Meer Ashwinkumar, Matthew Dodelson, Abhiram Kidambi, Jacob M. Leedom, Masahito Yamazaki We discuss ensemble averages of two-dimensional conformal field theories associated with an arbitrary indefinite lattice with integral quadratic form Q. We provide evidence that the holographic dual after the ensemble average is the three-dimensional Abelian Chern-Simons theory with kinetic term determined by Q. The resulting partition function can be written as a modular form, expressed as a sum over the partition functions of Chern-Simons theories on lens spaces. For odd lattices, the dual bulk theory is a spin Chern-Simons theory, and we identify several novel phenomena in this case. We also discuss the holographic duality prior to averaging in terms of Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories.

Intertwining operator and integrable hierarchies from topological strings

arXiv:2101.09925 Jean-Emile Bourgine In [1], Nakatsu and Takasaki have shown that the melting crystal model behind the topological strings vertex provides a tau-function of the KP hierarchy after an appropriate time deformation. We revisit their derivation with a focus on the underlying quantum W1+∞ symmetry. Specifically, we point out the role played by automorphisms and the connection with the intertwiner - or vertex operator - of the algebra. This algebraic perspective allows us to extend part of their derivation to the refined melting crystal model, lifting the algebra to the quantum toroidal algebra of gl(1) (also called Ding-Iohara-Miki algebra). In this way, we take a first step toward the definition of deformed hierarchies associated to A-model refined topological strings.

Integral Representations of Rank Two False Theta Functions and Their Modularity Properties

arXiv:2101.02902 Kathrin Bringmann, Jonas Kaszian, Antun Milas, Caner Nazaroglu False theta functions form a family of functions with intriguing modular properties and connections to mock modular forms. In this paper, we take the first step towards investigating modular transformations of higher rank false theta functions, following the example of higher depth mock modular forms. In particular, we prove that under quite general conditions, a rank two false theta function is determined in terms of iterated, holomorphic, Eichler-type integrals. This provides a new method for examining their modular properties and we apply it in a variety of situations where rank two false theta functions arise. We first consider generic parafermion characters of vertex algebras of type A2 and B2. This requires a fairly non-trivial analysis of Fourier coefficients of meromorphic Jacobi forms of negative index, which is of independent interest. Then we discuss modularity of rank two false theta functions coming from superconformal Schur indices. Lastly, we analyze Z^-invariants of Gukov, Pei, Putrov, and Vafa for certain plumbing H-graphs. Along the way, our method clarifies previous results on depth two quantum modularity.

Mathieu Moonshine and Siegel Modular Forms

arXiv:2011.07922 Suresh Govindarajan, Sutapa Samanta A second-quantized version of Mathieu moonshine leads to product formulae for functions that are potentially genus-two Siegel Modular Forms analogous to the Igusa Cusp Form. The modularity of these functions do not follow in an obvious manner. For some conjugacy classes, but not all, they match known modular forms. In this paper,we prove that the product formulae for all conjugacy classes of M24 are indeed Siegel Modular Forms.

Fun with F24

arXiv:2009.14710 Sarah M. Harrison, Natalie M. Paquette, Daniel Persson, Roberto Volpato We study some special features of F24, the holomorphic c=12 superconformal field theory (SCFT) given by 24 chiral free fermions. We construct eight different Lie superalgebras of "physical" states of a chiral superstring compactified on F24, and we prove that they all have the structure of Borcherds-Kac-Moody superalgebras. This produces a family of new examples of such superalgebras. The models depend on the choice of an N=1 supercurrent on F24, with the admissible choices labeled by the semisimple Lie algebras of dimension 24. We also discuss how F24, with any such choice of supercurrent, can be obtained via orbifolding from another distinguished c=12 holomorphic SCFT, the N=1 supersymmetric version of the chiral CFT based on the E8 lattice.

Eichler integrals of Eisenstein series as q-brackets of weighted t-hook functions on partitions

arXiv:2009.07236 Kathrin Bringmann, Ken Ono, Ian Wagner We consider the t-hook functions on partitions fa,t:P→C defined by fa,t(λ):=ta−1∑h∈Ht(λ)1ha, where Ht(λ) is the multiset of partition hook numbers that are multiples of t. The Bloch-Okounkov q-brackets ⟨fa,t⟩q include Eichler integrals of the classical Eisenstein series. For even a≥2, we show that these q-brackets are natural pieces of weight 2−a sesquiharmonic and harmonic Maass forms, while for odd a≤−1, we show that they are holomorphic quantum modular forms. We use these results to obtain new formulas of Chowla-Selberg type, and asymptotic expansions involving values of the Riemann zeta-function and Bernoulli numbers. We make use of work of Berndt, Han and Ji, and Zagier.

Topological Strings on XN,M: Conifold Singularities and Degeneration of Mirror Curves

arXiv:2009.07374 Ambreen Ahmed, M.Nouman Muteeb In this paper we study certain degenerations of the mirror curves, associated with Calabi-Yau threefolds XN,M, and the effect of these degenerations on the topological string partition function of XN,M. We show that when the mirror curve degenerates and become the union of the lower genus curves the corresponding partition function factorizes into pieces corresponding to the components of the degenerate mirror curve. Moreoever we show that using degeneration of a generalised mirror curve it is possible to obtain the partition function corresponding to XN,M−1 from XN,M.

q-Version of Harer-Zagier formula

arXiv:2008.09577 Alexei Morozov, Aleksandr Popolitov, Shamil Shakirov We derive an analogue of the famous Harer-Zagier formula in the q-deformed Hermitian Gaussian matrix model. This fully describes single-trace correlators and opens a road to q-deformations of important matrix models properties, such as genus expansion and Wick theorem.

Surface defects on E-string from 5-brane webs

arXiv:2008.06428 Sung-Soo Kim, Yuji Sugimoto, Futoshi Yagi We study 6d E-string theory with defects on a circle. Our basic strategy is to apply the geometric transition to the supersymmetric gauge theories. First, we calculate the partition functions of the 5d SU(3)0 gauge theory with 10 flavors, which is UV-dual to the 5d Sp(2) gauge theory with 10 flavors, based on two different 5-brane web diagrams, and check that two partition functions agree with each other. Then, by utilizing the geometric transition, we find the surface defect partition function for E-string on R4×T2. We also discuss that our result is consistent with the elliptic genus. Based on the result, we show how the global symmetry is broken by the defects, and discuss that the breaking pattern depends on where/how we insert the defects.

Exact results and Schur expansions in quiver Chern-Simons-matter theories

arXiv:2008.00465 Leonardo Santilli, Miguel Tierz We study several quiver Chern-Simons-matter theories on the three-sphere, combining the matrix model formulation with a systematic use of Mordell's integral, computing partition functions and checking dualities. We also consider Wilson loops in ABJ(M) theories, distinguishing between typical (long) and atypical (short) representations and focusing on the former. Using the Berele-Regev factorization of supersymmetric Schur polynomials, we express the expectation value of the Wilson loops in terms of sums of observables of two factorized copies of U(N) pure Chern-Simons theory on the sphere. Then, we use the Cauchy identity to study the partition functions of a number of quiver Chern-Simons-matter models and the result is interpreted as a perturbative expansion in the parameters tj=−e2πmj, where mj are the masses. Through the paper, we incorporate different generalizations, such as deformations by real masses and/or Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters, the consideration of a Romans mass in the gravity dual, and adjoint matter.

On matrix models and their q-deformations

arXiv:2007.10354

Luca CassiaRebecca LodinMaxim Zabzine

Motivated by the BPS/CFT correspondence, we explore the similarities between the classical β-deformed Hermitean matrix model and the q-deformed matrix models associated to 3d N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories on D2×qS1 and S3b by matching parameters of the theories. The novel results that we obtain are the correlators for the models, together with an additional result in the classical case consisting of the W-algebra representation of the generating function. Furthermore, we also obtain surprisingly simple expressions for the expectation values of characters which generalize previously known results.

Fermi gas approach to general rank theories and quantum curves

arXiv:2007.08602

Naotaka Kubo

It is known that matrix models computing the partition functions of three-dimensional N=4 superconformal Chern-Simons theories described by circular quiver diagrams can be written as the partition functions of ideal Fermi gases when all the nodes have equal ranks. We extend this approach to rank deformed theories. The resulting matrix models factorize into factors depending only on the relative ranks in addition to the Fermi gas factors. We find that this factorization plays a critical role in showing the equality of the partition functions of dual theories related by the Hanany-Witten transition. Furthermore, we show that the inverses of the density matrices of the ideal Fermi gases can be simplified and regarded as quantum curves as in the case without rank deformations. We also comment on four nodes theories using our results.

Qubit Construction in 6D SCFTs

arXiv:2007.08545

Jonathan J. Heckman

We consider a class of 6D superconformal field theories (SCFTs) which have a large N limit and a semi-classical gravity dual description. Using the quiver-like structure of 6D SCFTs we study a subsector of operators protected from large operator mixing. These operators are characterized by degrees of freedom in a one-dimensional spin chain, and the associated states are generically highly entangled. This provides a concrete realization of qubit-like states in a strongly coupled quantum field theory. Renormalization group flows triggered by deformations of 6D UV fixed points translate to specific deformations of these one-dimensional spin chains. We also present a conjectural spin chain Hamiltonian which tracks the evolution of these states as a function of renormalization group flow, and study qubit manipulation in this setting. Similar considerations hold for theories without AdS duals, such as 6D little string theories and 4D SCFTs obtained from compactification of the partial tensor branch theory on aT2.
