Reducing a 6d fivebrane theory on a 3-manifold Y gives a q-series 3-manifold invariant Zˆ(Y). We analyse the large-Nbehaviour of FK=Zˆ(MK), where MK is the complement of a knot K in the 3-sphere, and explore the relationship between an a-deformed (a=qN) version of FK and HOMFLY-PT polynomials. On the one hand, in combination with counts of holomorphic annuli on knot complements, this gives an enumerative interpretation of FK in terms of counts of open holomorphic curves. On the other, it leads to closed form expressions for a-deformed FK for (2,2p+1)-torus knots. They suggest a furthert-deformation based on superpolynomials, which can be used to obtain a t-deformation of ADO polynomials, expected to be related to categorification. Moreover, studying how FK transforms under natural geometric operations on K indicates relations to quantum modularity in a new setting.

Motivated by recent advances in Donaldson-Thomas theory, four-dimensional N=4 string-string duality is examined in a reduced rank theory on a less studied BPS sector. For this we identify a candidate partition function of ``untwisted'' quarter-BPS dyons in the heterotic Z2 CHL model by studying the associated chiral genus two partition function, based on the M-theory lift of string webs argument by Dabholkar and Gaiotto. This yields a meromorphic Siegel modular form for the Iwahori subgroup B(2)⊂Sp4(Z) which generates BPS indices for dyons with untwisted sector electric charge, in contrast to twisted sector dyons counted by a multiplicative lift of twisted-twining elliptic genera known from Mathieu moonshine. The new partition function is shown to satisfy the expected constraints coming from wall-crossing and S-duality symmetry as well as black hole entropy based on the Gauss-Bonnet term in the effective action. In these aspects our analysis confirms and extends work of Banerjee, Sen and Srivastava, which only addressed a subset of the untwisted sector dyons considered here. Our result also agrees with a recently conjectured formula of Bryan and Oberdieck for the partition function of primitive, untwisted DT invariants of the CHL orbifold X=(K3×T2)/Z2, as demanded by string duality with type IIA theory on X.

We derive a holomorphic anomaly equation for the Vafa-Witten partition function for twisted four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on CP2 for the gauge group SO(3) from the path integral of the effective theory on the Coulomb branch. The holomorphic kernel of this equation, which receives contributions only from the instantons, is not modular but `mock modular'. The partition function has correct modular properties expected from S-duality only after including the anomalous nonholomorphic boundary contributions from anti-instantons. Using M-theory duality, we relate this phenomenon to the holomorphic anomaly of the elliptic genus of a two-dimensional noncompact sigma model and compute it independently in two dimensions. The anomaly both in four and in two dimensions can be traced to a topological term in the effective action of six-dimensional (2,0) theory on the tensor branch. We consider generalizations to other manifolds and other gauge groups to show that mock modularity is generic and essential for exhibiting duality when the relevant field space is noncompact.

We study generating series of torus integrals that contain all so-called modular graph forms relevant for massless one-loop closed-string amplitudes. By analysing the differential equation of the generating series we construct a solution for its low-energy expansion to all orders in the inverse string tension α′. Our solution is expressed through initial data involving multiple zeta values and certain real-analytic functions of the modular parameter of the torus. These functions are built from real and imaginary parts of holomorphic iterated Eisenstein integrals and should be closely related to Brown's recent construction of real-analytic modular forms. We study the properties of our real-analytic objects in detail and give explicit examples to a fixed order in the α′-expansion. In particular, our solution allows for a counting of linearly independent modular graph forms at a given weight, confirming previous partial results and giving predictions for higher, hitherto unexplored weights. It also sheds new light on the topic of uniform transcendentality of the α′-expansion.

We propose a geometric characterisation of the topological string partition functions associated to the local Calabi-Yau (CY) manifolds used in the geometric engineering of d=4, N=2 supersymmetric field theories of class S. A quantisation of these CY manifolds defines differential operators called quantum curves. The partition functions are extracted from the isomonodromic tau-functions associated to the quantum curves by expansions of generalised theta series type. It turns out that the partition functions are in one-to-one correspondence with preferred coordinates on the moduli spaces of quantum curves defined using the Exact WKB method. The coordinates defined in this way jump across certain loci in the moduli space. The changes of normalisation of the tau-functions associated to these jumps define a natural line bundle playing a key role in the geometric characterisation of the topological string partition functions proposed here.

We construct the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of the very extended algebra A1+++ and its vector representation. This theory has an infinite number of fields that depend on a spacetime with an infinite number of coordinates. Discarding all except the lowest level field and coordinates the dynamics is just Einstein's equation for the graviton field. We show that the gravity field is related to the dual graviton field by a duality relation and we also derive the equation of motion for the dual gravity field.

We revisit the duality between five-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories and deformations of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory from a new perspective. We give a unified treatment of supersymmetric gauge theories in three and five dimensions using cohomological localization techniques and the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. We survey various known results in a unified framework and provide simplified derivations of localization formulas, as well as various extensions including the case of irregular Seifert fibrations. We describe the reductions to four-dimensional gauge theories, and give an extensive description of the dual two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory when the three-dimensional part of the geometry is a squashed three-sphere, including its extension to non-zero area, and a detailed analysis of the resulting matrix model. The squashing parameter b yields a further deformation of the usual q-deformation of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, which for rational values b2=p/s yields a new correspondence with Chern-Simons theory on lens spaces L(p,s).

We look at genera of even unimodular lattices of rank 12 over the ring of integers of Q(5–√) and of rank 8 over the ring of integers of Q(3–√), using Kneser neighbours to diagonalise spaces of scalar-valued algebraic modular forms. We conjecture most of the global Arthur parameters, and prove several of them using theta series, in the manner of Ikeda and Yamana. We find instances of congruences for non-parallel weight Hilbert modular forms. Turning to the genus of Hermitian lattices of rank 12 over the Eisenstein integers, even and unimodular over Z, we prove a conjecture of Hentschel, Krieg and Nebe, identifying a certain linear combination of theta series as an Hermitian Ikeda lift, and we prove that another is an Hermitian Miyawaki lift.
