Strings of Minimal 6d SCFTs

We study strings associated with minimal 6d SCFTs, which by definition have only one string charge and no Higgs branch. These theories are labelled by a number n with 1 <= n <= 8 or n = 12. Quiver theories have previously been proposed which describe strings of SCFTs for n = 1, 2. For n > 2 the strings interact with the bulk gauge symmetry. In this paper we find a quiver description for the n = 4 string using Sen's limit of F-theory and calculate its elliptic genus with localization techniques. This result is checked using the duality of F-theory with M-theory and topological string theory whose refined BPS partition function captures the elliptic genus of the SCFT strings. We use the topological string theory to gain insight into the elliptic genus for other values of n.

A short overview of the "Topological recursion"

This is a short overview of the "topological recursion", a relation appearing in the asymptotic expansion of many integrable systems and in enumerative problems. We recall how computing large size asymptotics in random matrices, has allowed to discover some fascinating and ubiquitous geometric invariants. Specializations of this method recover many classical invariants, like Gromov--Witten invariants, or knot polynomials (Jones, HOMFLY,...). In this short review, we give some examples, give definitions, and review some properties and applications of the formalism.

On the elliptic genera of manifolds of Spin(7) holonomy

Superstring compactification on a manifold of Spin(7) holonomy gives rise to a 2d worldsheet conformal field theory with an extended supersymmetry algebra. The N=1 superconformal algebra is extended by additional generators of spins 2 and 5/2, and instead of just superconformal symmetry one has a c=12 realization of the symmetry group SW(3/2,2). In this paper, we compute the characters of this supergroup, and decompose the elliptic genus of a general Spin(7) compactification in terms of these characters. We find suggestive relations to various sporadic groups, which are made more precise in a companion paper.

Permutation orbifolds and holography

Two dimensional conformal field theories with large central charge and a sparse low-lying spectrum are expected to admit a classical string holographic dual. We construct a large class of such theories employing permutation orbifold technology. In particular, we describe the group theoretic constraints on permutation groups to ensure a (stringy) holographic CFT. The primary result we uncover is that in order for the degeneracy of states to be finite in the large central charge limit, the groups of interest are the so-called oligomorphic permutation groups. Further requiring that the low-lying spectrum be sparse enough puts a bound on the number of orbits of these groups (on finite element subsets). Along the way we also study familiar cyclic and symmetric orbifolds to build intuition. We also demonstrate how holographic spectral properties are tied to the geometry of covering spaces for permutation orbifolds.

Moonshine

Monstrous moonshine relates distinguished modular functions to the representation theory of the monster. The celebrated observations that 196884=1+196883 and 21493760=1+196883+21296876, etc., illustrate the case of the modular function j-744, whose coefficients turn out to be sums of the dimensions of the 194 irreducible representations of the monster. Such formulas are dictated by the structure of the graded monstrous moonshine modules. Recent works in moonshine suggest deep relations between number theory and physics. Number theoretic Kloosterman sums have reappeared in quantum gravity, and mock modular forms have emerged as candidates for the computation of black hole degeneracies. This paper is a survey of past and present research on moonshine. We also obtain exact formulas for the multiplicities of the irreducible components of the moonshine modules. These formulas imply that such multiplicities are asymptotically proportional to dimensions.

On crystal bases of two-parameter $(v, t)$-quantum groups

Following Kashiwara's algebraic approach in one-parameter case, we construct crystal bases for two-parameter quantum algebras and for their integral modules. We also show that the global crystal basis coincides with the canonical basis constructed by Fan and Li up to a 2-cocycle deformation.

Elliptic Genus of E-strings

We study a family of 2d N=(0,4) gauge theories which describes at low energy the dynamics of E-strings, the M2-branes suspended between a pair of M5 and M9 branes. The gauge theory is engineered using a duality with type IIA theory, leading to the D2-branes suspended between an NS5-brane and 8 D8-branes on an O8-plane. We compute the elliptic genus of this family of theories, and find agreement with the known results for single and two E-strings. The partition function can in principle be computed for arbitrary number of E-strings, and we compute them explicitly for low numbers. We test our predictions against the partially known results from topological strings, as well as from the instanton calculus of 5d Sp(1) gauge theory. Given the relation to topological strings, our computation provides the all genus partition function of the refined topological strings on the canonical bundle over 1/2 K3.

Congruences for Taylor expansions of quantum modular forms

Recently, a beautiful paper of Andrews and Sellers has established linear congruences for the Fishburn numbers modulo an infinite set of primes. Since then, a number of authors have proven refined results, for example, extending all of these congruences to arbitrary powers of the primes involved. Here, we take a different perspective and explain the general theory of such congruences in the context of an important class of quantum modular forms. As one example, we obtain an infinite series of combinatorial sequences connected to the "half-derivatives" of the Andrews-Gordon functions and with Kashaev's invariant on $(2m+1,2)$ torus knots, and we prove conditions under which the sequences satisfy linear congruences modulo at least $50\%$ of primes of primes.

The asymptotic profile of $χ_y$-genera of Hilbert schemes of points on K3 surfaces

The Hodge numbers of the Hilbert schemes of points on algebraic surfaces are given by G\"ottsche's formula, which expresses the generating functions of the Hodge numbers in terms of theta and eta functions. We specialize in this paper to generating functions of the $\chi_y(\mathrm{K3}^{[n]})$ genera of Hilbert schemes of $n$ points on K3 surfaces. We determine asymptotic values of the coefficients of the $\chi_y$-genus for $n\to \infty$ as well as their asymptotic profile.

Multispecies quantum Hurwitz numbers

The construction of hypergeometric 2D Toda $\tau$-functions as generating functions for quantum Hurwitz numbers is extended here to multispecies families. Both the enumerative geometrical significance of these multispecies quantum Hurwitz numbers as weighted enumerations of branched coverings of the Riemann sphere and their combinatorial significance in terms of weighted paths in the Cayley graph of $S_n$ are derived.

Quantization conditions and functional equations in ABJ(M) theories

The partition function of ABJ(M) theories on the three-sphere can be regarded as the canonical partition function of an ideal Fermi gas with a non-trivial Hamiltonian. We propose an exact expression for the spectral determinant of this Hamiltonian, which generalizes recent results obtained in the maximally supersymmetric case. As a consequence, we find an exact WKB quantization condition determining the spectrum which is in agreement with numerical results. In addition, we investigate the factorization properties and functional equations for our conjectured spectral determinants. These functional equations relate the spectral determinants of ABJ theories with consecutive ranks of gauge groups but the same Chern-Simons coupling.

ADE Double Scaled Little String Theories, Mock Modular Forms and Umbral Moonshine

We consider double scaled little string theory on $K3$. These theories are labelled by a positive integer $k \ge 2$ and an $ADE$ root lattice with Coxeter number $k$. We count BPS fundamental string states in the holographic dual of this theory using the superconformal field theory $K3 \times \left( \frac{SL(2,\mathbb{R})_k}{U(1)} \times \frac{SU(2)_k}{U(1)} \right) \big/ \mathbb{Z}_k$. We show that the BPS fundamental string states that are counted by the second helicity supertrace of this theory give rise to weight two mixed mock modular forms. We compute the helicity supertraces using two separate techniques: a path integral analysis that leads to a modular invariant but non-holomorphic answer, and a Hamiltonian analysis of the contribution from discrete states which leads to a holomorphic but not modular invariant answer. From a mathematical point of view the Hamiltonian analysis leads to a mixed mock modular form while the path integral gives the completion of this mixed mock modular form. We also compare these weight two mixed mock modular forms to those that appear in instances of Umbral Moonshine labelled by Niemeier root lattices $X$ that are powers of $ADE$ root lattices and find that they are equal up to a constant factor that we determine. In the course of the analysis we encounter an interesting generalization of Appell-Lerch sums and generalizations of the Riemann relations of Jacobi theta functions that they obey.

Resurgent Analysis of Localizable Observables in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

Localization methods have recently led to a plethora of new exact results in supersymmetric gauge theories, as certain observables may be computed in terms of matrix integrals. These can then be evaluated by making use of standard large N techniques, or else via perturbative expansions in the gauge coupling. Either approximation often leads to observables given in terms of asymptotic series, which need to be properly defined in order to obtain nonperturbative results. At the same time, resurgent analysis has recently been successfully applied to several problems, e.g., in quantum, field and string theories, precisely to overcome this issue and construct nonperturbative answers out of asymptotic perturbative expansions. The present work uses exact results from supersymmetric localization to address the resurgent structure of the free energy and partition function of Chern-Simons and ABJM gauge theories in three dimensions, and of N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in four dimensions. For each case, the complete structure of Borel singularities is exactly determined, and the relation of these singularities with the large-order behavior of (multi-instanton) perturbative expansions is made fully precise.

ABJM Membrane Instanton from Pole Cancellation Mechanism

The coefficients of the membrane instantons in the ABJM theory are known to be quadratic polynomials of the chemical potential. We show that, after deforming the ABJM theory into more general superconformal Chern-Simons theories labelled by (q,p) where the original ABJM theory corresponds to (q,p)=(1,1), we can decompose the membrane instanton into three types of non-perturbative effects with constant coefficients independent of the chemical potential. We find that, although these constants contain poles at certain values of q and p including the ABJM case, all of the poles cancel among themselves and the finite quadratic polynomial coefficients are reproduced at these values. This is similar to what happens between the membrane instantons and the worldsheet instantons in the ABJM theory.

Kloosterman sums in residue classes

We prove upper bounds for sums of Kloosterman sums against general arithmetic weight functions. In particular, we obtain power cancellation in sums of Kloosterman sums over arithmetic progressions, which is of square-root strength in any fixed primitive congruence class up to bounds towards the Ramanujan conjecture.

Topological Strings from Quantum Mechanics

We propose a general correspondence which associates a non-perturbative quantum-mechanical operator to a toric Calabi-Yau manifold, and we conjecture an explicit formula for its spectral determinant in terms of an M-theoretic version of the topological string free energy. As a consequence, we derive an exact quantization condition for the operator spectrum, in terms of the vanishing of a generalized theta function. The perturbative part of this quantization condition is given by the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the refined topological string, but there are non-perturbative corrections determined by the conventional topological string. We analyze in detail the cases of local P2, local P1xP1 and local F1. In all these cases, the predictions for the spectrum agree with the existing numerical results. We also show explicitly that our conjectured spectral determinant leads to the correct spectral traces of the corresponding operators, which are closely related to topological string theory at orbifold points. Physically, our results provide a Fermi gas picture of topological strings on toric Calabi-Yau manifolds, which is fully non-perturbative and background independent. They also suggest the existence of an underlying theory of M2 branes behind this formulation. Mathematically, our results lead to precise, surprising conjectures relating the spectral theory of functional difference operators to enumerative geometry.

N=2 quiver gauge theories on ALE spaces

We survey and compare recent approaches to the computation of the partition functions and correlators of chiral BPS observables in $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories on ALE spaces based on quiver varieties and the minimal resolution $X_k$ of the $A_{k-1}$ toric singularity $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_k$, in light of their recently conjectured duality with two-dimensional coset conformal field theories. We review and elucidate the rigorous constructions of gauge theories for a particular family of ALE spaces, using their relation to the cohomology of moduli spaces of framed torsion free sheaves on a suitable orbifold compactification of $X_k$. We extend these computations to generic $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal quiver gauge theories, obtaining in these instances new constraints on fractional instanton charges, a rigorous proof of the Nekrasov master formula, and new quantizations of Hitchin systems based on the underlying Seiberg-Witten geometry.

Will a physicists prove the Riemann Hypothesis?

In the first part we present the number theoretical properties of the Riemann zeta function and formulate the Riemann Hypothesis. In the second part we review some physical problems related to this hypothesis: the links with Random Matrix Theory, relation with the Lee--Yang theorem on the zeros of the partition function, random walks, billiards etc.

On a Gopakumar-Vafa form of partition function of Chern-Simons theory on classical and exceptional lines

We show that partition function of Chern-Simons theory on three-sphere with classical and exceptional groups (actually on the whole corresponding lines in Vogel's plane) can be represented as ratio of respectively triple and double sine functions (last function is essentially a modular quantum dilogarithm). The product representation of sine functions gives Gopakumar-Vafa structure form of partition function, which in turn gives a corresponding integer invariants of manifold after geometrical transition. In this way we suggest to extend gauge/string duality to exceptional groups, although one still have to identify geometrically the corresponding manifold with given invariants, and also resolve some other problems. In both classical and exceptional cases an additional terms, non-perturbative w.r.t. the string coupling constant, appear. The full universal partition function of Chern-Simons theory on three-sphere is shown to be the ratio of quadruple sine functions. We also discuss the matrix model for exceptional line.

Automorphisms of extremal unimodular lattices in dimension 72

The paper narrows down the possible automorphisms of extremal even unimodular lattices of dimension 72. With extensive computations in {\sc Magma} using the very sophisticated algorithm for computing class groups of algebraic number fields written by Steve Donnelly it is shown that the extremal even unimodular lattice $\Gamma _{72}$ from \cite{dim72} is the unique extremal even unimodular lattice of dimension 72 that admits a large automorphism, where a $d\times d$ matrix is called large, if its minimal polynomial has an irreducible factor of degree $> d/2$.
