Generalised Space-time and Gauge Transformations

We consider the generalised space-time introduced by the author in 2003 in the context of the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E11 and its first fundamental representation. For all the fields we propose gauge transformations which are compatible with the underlying E11 structure. A crucial role is played by the generalised vielbein that the generalised space-time possess. We work out the explicit form of the gauge transformations, at low levels, in four, five and eleven dimensions.

M-theoretic matrix models

Some matrix models admit, on top of the usual 't Hooft expansion, an M-theory-like expansion, i.e. an expansion at large N but where the rest of the parameters are fixed, instead of scaling with N. These models, which we call M-theoretic matrix models, appear in the localization of Chern-Simons-matter theories, and also in two-dimensional statistical physics. Generically, their partition function receives non-perturbative corrections which are not captured by the 't Hooft expansion. In this paper, we discuss general aspects of these type of matrix integrals and we analyze in detail two different examples. The first one is the matrix model computing the partition function of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in three dimensions with one adjoint hypermultiplet and N_f fundamentals, which has a conjectured M-theory dual, and which we call the N_f matrix model. The second one, which we call the polymer matrix model, computes form factors of the 2d Ising model and is related to the physics of 2d polymers. In both cases we determine their exact planar limit. In the N_f matrix model, the planar free energy reproduces the expected behavior of the M-theory dual. We also study their M-theory expansion by using Fermi gas techniques, and we find non-perturbative corrections to the 't Hooft expansion.

Classical and Umbral Moonshine: Connections and $p$-adic Properties

The classical theory of monstrous moonshine describes the unexpected connection between the representation theory of the monster group $M$, the largest of the simple sporadic groups, and certain modular functions, called Hauptmodln. In particular, the $n$-th Fourier coefficient of Klein's $j$-function is the dimension of the grade $n$ part of a special infinite dimensional representation $V$ of the monster group. More generally the coefficients of Hauptmoduln are graded traces $T_g$ of $g \in M$ acting on $V$. Similar phenomena have been shown to hold for the Matthieu group $M_{24}$, but instead of modular functions, mock modular forms must be used. This has been conjecturally generalized even further, to umbral moonshine, which associates to each of the 23 Niemeier lattices a finite group, infinite dimensional representation, and mock modular form. We use generalized Borcherds products to relate monstrous moonshine and umbral moonshine. Namely, we use mock modular forms from umbral moonshine to construct via generalized Borcherds products rational functions of the Hauptmoduln $T_g$ from monstrous moonshine. This allows us to associate to each pure $A$-type Niemeier lattice a conjugacy class $g$ of the monster group, and gives rise to identities relating dimensions of representations from umbral moonshine to values of $T_g$. We also show that the logarithmic derivatives of the Borcherds products are $p$-adic modular forms for certain primes $p$ and describe some of the resulting properties of their coefficients modulo $p$.

$A_n$-Triality

A_n-type AGT correspondence anticipates that conformal blocks of A_n Toda CFT are related to partition functions of a family of 4d N=2 SCFTs. We use gauge/vortex duality to both give a precise form of the correspondence, and to prove it. Gauge/vortex duality relates the 4d theories and the 2d theories living on its vortices. Partition functions of the 2d theories on vortices provide Coulomb-gas representation of A_n Toda conformal blocks with discrete internal momenta. This gives a triality of relations between the gauge theory, its vortices and the Toda CFT. We prove that A_n triality holds for conformal blocks of A_n Toda on a sphere with all full punctures. The lift to one higher dimensional theories, compactified on a circle of arbitrary radius, and q-deformation of the Toda CFT, play a key role.

Coulomb branch Hilbert series and Three Dimensional Sicilian Theories

We evaluate the Coulomb branch Hilbert series of mirrors of three dimensional Sicilian theories, which arise from compactifying the $6d$ $(2,0)$ theory with symmetry $G$ on a circle times a Riemann surface with punctures. We obtain our result by gluing together the Hilbert series for building blocks $T_{\mathbf{\rho}}(G)$, where $\mathbf{\rho}$ is a certain partition related to the dual group of $G$, which we evaluated in a previous paper. The result is expressed in terms of a class of symmetric functions, the Hall-Littlewood polynomials. As expected from mirror symmetry, our results agree at genus zero with the superconformal index prediction for the Higgs branch Hilbert series of the Sicilian theories and extend it to higher genus. In the $A_1$ case at genus zero, we also evaluate the Coulomb branch Hilbert series of the Sicilian theory itself, showing that it only depends on the number of external legs.

Factorization of 4d N=1 superconformal index

We study the factorization of four dimensional N=1 superconformal index for U(N) (SU(N)) SQCD with N_F fundamental and anti-fundamental chiral multiplets. When both the anomaly free R-charge assignment and the traceless condition for total vorticities are satisfied, we find that the superconformal index factorizes to a pair of the elliptic uplift of the vortex partition functions. We also study the relation between open topological string and the the elliptic uplift of the vortex partition functions. In the three dimensional limit, we show index for U(N) theory reduces to the factorized form of the partition function on the three dimensional squashed sphere.

Coulomb branch Hilbert series and Hall-Littlewood polynomials

There has been a recent progress in understanding the chiral ring of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal gauge theories by explicitly constructing an exact generating function (Hilbert series) counting BPS operators on the Coulomb branch. In this paper we introduce Coulomb branch Hilbert series in the presence of background magnetic charges for flavor symmetries, which are useful for computing the Hilbert series of more general theories through gluing techniques. We find a simple formula of the Hilbert series with background magnetic charges for $T_\rho(G)$ theories in terms of Hall-Littlewood polynomials. Here $G$ is a classical group and $\rho$ is a certain partition related to the dual group of $G$. The Hilbert series for vanishing background magnetic charges show that Coulomb branches of $T_\rho(G)$ theories are complete intersections. We also demonstrate that mirror symmetry maps background magnetic charges to baryonic charges.

Nonassociative geometry and twist deformations in non-geometric string theory

We describe nonassociative deformations of geometry probed by closed strings in non-geometric flux compactifications of string theory. We show that these non-geometric backgrounds can be geometrised through the dynamics of open membranes whose boundaries propagate in the phase space of the target space compactification, equiped with a twisted Poisson structure. The effective membrane target space is determined by the standard Courant algebroid over the target space twisted by an abelian gerbe in momentum space. Quantization of the membrane sigma-model leads to a proper quantization of the non-geometric background, which we relate to Kontsevich's formalism of global deformation quantization that constructs a noncommutative nonassociative star product on phase space. We construct Seiberg-Witten type maps between associative and nonassociative backgrounds, and show how they may realise a nonassociative deformation of gravity. We also explain how this approach is related to the quantization of certain Lie 2-algebras canonically associated to the twisted Courant algebroid, and cochain twist quantization using suitable quasi-Hopf algebras of symmetries in the phase space description of R-space which constructs a Drinfel'd twist with non-trivial 3-cocycle. We illustrate and apply our formalism to present a consistent phase space formulation of nonassociative quantum mechanics.

Fusion procedure for the two-parameter quantum algebra U_{r,s}(sl_n)

Irreducible modules of the two-parameter quantum enveloping algebra U_{r,s}(sl_n) are explicitly constructed using the fusion procedure. This provides a detailed combinatorial description of the Schur-Weyl duality for two-parameter quantum algebras of type A.

Generalized Bernoulli numbers and a formula of Lucas

An overlooked formula of E. Lucas for the generalized Bernoulli numbers is proved using generating functions. This is then used to provide a new proof and a new form of a sum involving classical Bernoulli numbers studied by K. Dilcher. The value of this sum is then given in terms of the Meixner-Pollaczek polynomials.

tt* Geometry and a Twistorial Extension of Topological Strings

We extend the recent study of 3d tt* geometry to 5d (4d) N=1 (N=2) supersymmetric theories. We show how the amplitudes of tt* geometry lead to an extension of topological strings and Nekrasov partition functions to twistor space, where the north/south poles of the twistor sphere lead to topological/anti-topological string amplitudes. However, the equator of the twistor sphere is the physical region for the amplitudes, where the unitarity of physical amplitudes is respected. We propose that the amplitudes for Line operators studied by Gaiotto, Moore and Neitzke lead to difference equations for the twistorial topological string partition function, extending the familiar one for the monodromy of Branes in the context of the standard topological strings. This setup unifies tt* geometry, topological strings and the hyperKahler geometry formulated by GMN into a single framework.

Inflationary Cosmology after Planck 2013

I give a general review of inflationary cosmology and of its present status, in view of the 2013 data release by the Planck satellite. A specific emphasis is given to the new broad class of theories, the cosmological attractors, which have nearly model-independent predictions converging at the sweet spot of the Planck data in the (n_s,r) plane. I also discuss the problem of initial conditions for the theories favored by the Planck data.

Mirror Symmetry in Three Dimensions via Gauged Linear Quivers

Starting from mirror pairs consisting only of linear (framed A-type) quivers, we demonstrate that a wide class of three-dimensional quiver gauge theories with N=4 supersymmetry and their mirror duals can be obtained by suitably gauging flavor symmetries. Infinite families of mirror pairs including various quivers of D and E-type and their affine extensions, star-shaped quivers, and quivers with symplectic gauge groups may be generated in this fashion. We present two different computational strategies to perform the aforementioned gauging procedure - one of them involves N=2* classical parameter space description, while the other one uses partition functions of the N=4 theories on S^3. The partition function, in particular, turns out to be an extremely efficient tool for implementing this gauging procedure as it readily generalizes to arbitrary size of the quiver and arbitrary rank of the gauge group at each node. For most examples of mirror pairs obtained via this procedure, we perform additional checks of mirror symmetry using the Hilbert series.

Torus knot polynomials and susy Wilson loops

We give, using an explicit expression obtained in [V. Jones, Ann. of Math. 126, 335 (1987)], a basic hypergeometric representation of the HOMFLY polynomial of $(n,m)$ torus knots, and present a number of equivalent expressions, all related by Heine's transformations. Using this result the $(m,n)\leftrightarrow (n,m)$ symmetry and the leading polynomial at large $N$ are explicit. We show the latter to be the Wilson loop of 2d Yang-Mills theory on the plane. In addition, after taking one winding to infinity, it becomes the Wilson loop in the zero instanton sector of the 2d Yang-Mills theory, which is known to give averages of Wilson loops in $\mathcal{N}$=4 SYM theory. We also give, using matrix models, an interpretation of the HOMFLY polynomial and the corresponding Jones-Rosso representation in terms of $q$-harmonic oscillators.

Inverse theta functions as quantum modular forms

In this paper, we consider the Fourier coefficients of a special class of meromorphic Jaocbi forms of negative index. Much recent work has been done on the Fourier coefficients of meromorphic Jacobi forms of positive index, but almost nothing is known for Jacobi forms of negative index. Here we show from two different perspectives that their Fourier coefficients have a simple decomposition in terms of partial theta functions. The first perspective uses the language of Lie super algebras, and the second applies the theory of elliptic functions. In particular, we find a new infinite family of rank-crank type PDEs generalizing the famous example of Atkin and Garvan. We then describe the modularity properties of these coefficients, showing that they are \emph{mixed quantum modular forms}, along the way determining a new class of quantum modular partial theta functions.

Generalized Penner model and the Gaussian beta ensemble

In this paper, a new expression for the partition function of the generalized Penner model given by Goulden, Harer and Jackson is derived. The Penner and the orthogonal Penner partition functions are special cases of this formula. The parametrized Euler characteristic $\xi^s_g(\gamma)$ deduced from our expression of the partition function is shown to exhibit a contribution from the orbifold Euler characteristic of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces of genus $g$, with $s$ punctures, for all parameters $\gamma$ and $g$ odd. The other contributions for $g$ even are linear combinations of the Bernoulli polynomials at rational arguments. It turns out that the free energy coefficients of the generalized Penner model in the continuum limit, are identical to those coefficients in the large $N$ expansion of the Gaussian $\beta$-ensemble. Moreover, the duality enjoyed by the generalized Penner model, is also the duality symmetry of the Gaussian $\beta$-ensemble. Finally, a shift in the 't Hooft coupling constant required by the refined topological string, would leave the Gaussian $\beta$-ensemble duality intact. This duality is identified with the remarkable duality of the $c=1$ string at radius $R=\beta$.

Knot Invariants from Topological Recursion on Augmentation Varieties

Using the duality between Wilson loop expectation values of SU(N) Chern-Simons theory on $S^3$ and topological open-string amplitudes on the local mirror of the resolved conifold, we study knots on $S^3$ and their invariants encoded in colored HOMFLY polynomials by means of topological recursion. In the context of the local mirror Calabi-Yau threefold of the resolved conifold, we generalize the topological recursion of the remodelled B-model in order to study branes beyond the class of toric Harvey-Lawson special Lagrangians -- as required for analyzing non-trivial knots on $S^3$. The basic ingredients for the proposed recursion are the spectral curve, given by the augmentation variety of the knot, and the calibrated annulus kernel, encoding the topological annulus amplitudes associated to the knot. We present an explicit construction of the calibrated annulus kernel for torus knots and demonstrate the validity of the topological recursion. We further argue that -- if an explicit form of the calibrated annulus kernel is provided for any other knot -- the proposed topological recursion should still be applicable. We study the implications of our proposal for knot theory, which exhibit interesting consequences for colored HOMFLY polynomials of mutant knots.

Quantum geometry of del Pezzo surfaces in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit

We use mirror symmetry, quantum geometry and modularity properties of elliptic curves to calculate the refined free energies in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit on non-compact toric Calabi-Yau manifolds, based on del Pezzo surfaces. Quantum geometry here is to be understood as a quantum deformed version of rigid special geometry, which has its origin in the quantum mechanical behaviour of branes in the topological string B-model. We will argue that, in the Seiberg-Witten picture, only the Coulomb parameters lead to quantum corrections, while the mass parameters remain uncorrected. In certain cases we will also compute the expansion of the free energies at the orbifold point and the conifold locus. We will compute the quantum corrections order by order on $\hbar$, by deriving second order differential operators, which act on the classical periods.

Poisson equations, higher derivative automorphic forms and string parameter limits

This paper considers the higher derivative terms in the effective action of type II string theory and in particular the behaviour of the automorphic forms they contain in all the different possible limits of the string parameters. The automorphic forms are thought to obey Poisson equations which contain the Laplacian defined on the coset space to which the scalars fields belong and we compute this Laplacian in all the possible string theory limits. We also consider these Poisson equations in the decompactification limit of a single dimension and by making two assumptions, one on the generic form of this equation and the other on the behaviour of the automorphic forms in this limit, we find strong constraints on the allowed form of this differential equation. We show that these constraints allow one to recover much of what was previously known about the automorphic forms corresponding to terms in the effective action that have fourteen or fewer space-time derivatives in a simple way.

2d SCFT from M-branes and its spectral network

We consider the low-energy limit of the two-dimensional theory on multiple M2-branes suspended between a flat M5-brane and a curved M5-brane. We argue that it is described by an $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg model with the superpotential determined by the shape of the curved M5-branes, which flows in the low-energy limit to a Kazama-Suzuki coset model. We provide evidence by studying ground states and BPS spectra of the systems.
